The George Borrow Hotel is located at the western edge of the Cambrian Mountains, in the foothills of Plynlimon, the highest peak in mid-Wales. From near its summit, the rivers Wye and Severn begin their course to England and the River Rheidol makes its way through Ponterwyd to the coast at Aberystwyth Wales

The hotel stands above the wooded Rheidol gorge which extends to nearby Devil's Bridge, the site of the famous Mynach waterfall and the terminus of the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway. An hour's stunningly scenic train ride takes the traveller to Aberystwyth.

A very short drive north from the hotel takes one to the remote uplands of Plynlimon, several lakes and the vast Nant y Moch reservoir.

To the south, beyond Devil's Bridge is another beautiful river valley, that of the Ystwyth, which like the Rheidol, reaches the sea at Aberystwyth.

Further south are the Teifi pools, the remains of Strata Florida Abbey and the vast expanse of Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, through which the river Teifi wends its way south to the coast at Cardigan or Aberteifi. Nearby is Tregaron from where the old drovers trails led over the mountains towards England.
The coast at Aberystwyth is just a short drive from the hotel. This charming sea-side town boasts the first University to be established in Wales, The National Library of Wales, The University Arts Centre and a fascinating Town Museum. Many visitors enjoy a delightful stroll along the promenade from the harbour, past the ruins of the castle and then the Old College building, the original site of the university, and on past the pier and more Georgian terraces to the north end of the prom, where traditionally one 'kicks the bar'. From there one can walk up Constitution Hill for fine view over the town.

An easy way up Consti is via the Cliff-railway. At the top is a camera obscura and the start of a cliff top walk northwards to Clarach Bay.
Just beyond Clarach lies the sea-side village of Borth with miles of golden sands extending to the Dyfi estuary at Ynyslas. The Ynyslas Dunes National Nature Reserve is within sight of another protected site, Cors Fochno NNR. A little way upstream, towards Machynlleth is one of the most scenic of all the RSPB's reserves, Ynys-hir.

To the south of Aberyswyth is the smart little Georgian town of Aberaeron with its neat terraces and harbour.

Continuing south along the coast, one reaches the attractive village of New Quay, famous for its Bottle-nosed Dolphins.

There are more good beaches here and boat trips take visitors to watch cliff-nesting sea-birds, seals and the dolphins. Further on are other lovely villages nestling by the cliffs and the sea, one of which is Llangranog.

All of these places are within an easy drive of the Hotel. One very special place is just a couple of minutes away. Near the hotel and just past the Llwernog Silver-Lead Mining Museum is Nant yr Arian, an official Red Kite feeding site. Up to 100 or more wild Red Kites are attracted to a forest lakeside where food is put out for them daily (2pm in winter, 3pm in summer). There is a visitor centre and café, miles of mountain bike trails and scenic paths for walkers.
